RACQ roadside patrols consider strike

Roadside maintenance mechanics from Queensland's motoring body, RACQ, are threatening
to strike over a new work agreement.

More than 100 mechanics will consider the action when they meet tomorrow.

A spokesman for the patrols says staff are angry and confused about the agreement,
which they say is inflexible.

But RACQ management spokesman GARY FITES has played down the threat of strike action,
saying that stage is a long way off.

And he says that contrary to popular belief, the run-up to Christmas is one of the
quieter times for roadside callouts.

Mr FITES says staff were fully consulted before the agreement was finalised and he
says he is bemused at the current situation.

The RACQ has fulltime staff to provide roadside maintenance to club members in Brisbane
and the Gold Coast, while it covers the remainder of the state with contractors.
