ALASKAN OIL PIPELINE AT RISK, STUDY SAYS.(MAIN)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Management incompetence and inattention to safety have greatly increased the chances of a catastrophic failure of the aging trans-Alaska oil pipeline, according to a federal report released Tuesday.

The report was commissioned by the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management. It also criticizes inspections, training and maintenance at Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., which operates the 800-mile pipeline.

The inattention means that no one knows when a problem will surface, how big it will be or its potential effect on public health and safety, the report said.

Alyeska President David Pritchard issued a written statement that didn't respond to specific allegations in the audit, but said the company would cooperate with the government to solve problems. -- Associated Press
