Qld: Strong rips expected on Qld beaches this Easter
BRISBANE, April 17 AAP - People flocking to the beaches in south-east Queensland thisEaster have been warned to watch out for strong winds and rips.
Surf Life Saving Queensland operations manager Peter Dawes said strong south-easterlywinds have been forecast for Good Friday and Easter Saturday, creating unstable beachconditions.
Exposed beaches on the Gold and Sunshine coasts would be the worst affected areas.
"Even if we get a swell of one to 1.5 metres, which isn't excessively big, you getstronger rips on the outgoing tide so there is an extra level of exposure when you combinethat with the big crowds we expect over Easter," Mr Dawes said.
Easter was the second highest period for drowning deaths after the Christmas-New Yearperiod holidays and beachgoers should only swim between the flags during patrol times.
In the year to June 30 last year, 14 people died on Queensland beaches, Mr Dawes said.
There were seven non-surf related drownings from activities including snorkelling.
